Skier dies in avalanche near Colorado ski resort

BRECKENRIDGE, Colo. — A man died and his father was injured on Saturday after they were caught in an avalanche near a Colorado ski resort, authorities said.

According to a release from Summit County Rescue Group, the two men were skiing in a backcountry area called The Numbers outside Breckenridge Ski Resort when they were caught in the avalanche at about 1 p.m. MST, KUSA-TV reported.

The father was able to dig himself out of the snow but had to ski out of the area to get reception to call 911 around 1:40 p.m. MST, according to KDVR-TV.

According to a Facebook post, 23 SCRG members responded to the area, along with three members of the Summit County Sheriff’s Office Special Operations Unit and members of the Breckenridge Ski Resort ski patrol.

After a probe line was formed, the younger adult was found by a dog team at about 3:11 p.m. and was dead at the scene, KUSA reported.

The Colorado Avalanche Information Center was expected to be at the scene to complete an accident investigation, according to the television station.
