The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus

The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus

Merging post-hardcore intensity with melodic, emo-driven alt-rock, the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus are a Florida-based band who rose to prominence in the latter part of the 2000s. Their 2006 debut, Don't You Fake It, was an immediate success, yielding the multi-platinum hit "Face Down." With its lyrics about domestic abuse, it introduced the band's commitment to socially conscious songwriting and activism, a trait they have carried throughout their career. After 2011's I Am the Enemy, they went independent, self-releasing their next two albums, including 2018's The Awakening. Despite numerous changes in personnel, the band remained consistently active and returned in 2025 with their sixth album, X's For Eyes, released by the Better Noise label.

Frontman Ronnie Winter formed the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus in Middleburg, Florida in 2003 and has remained its one constant member. Bassist Joey Westwood, who joined in 2005 is the second longest-tenured member. A locally-distributed 6 Song EP helped them secure a deal with Virgin Records which released their 2006 debut album, Don't You Fake It. By this point the lineup consisted of Winter (vocals, guitar, keys), Westwood (bass), Elias Reidy (lead guitar), John Wilkes (drums), and Duke Kitchens (guitar), who was its other original founding member. From their start, the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus presented a potent sonic mix of post-hardcore, screamo, emo, and pop-punk with a clear-eyed vision that tackled social themes and had an undercurrent of Christian faith. Don't You Fake It reached a number of U.S. charts and cracked the top half of the Billboard 200, thanks to its breakout single "Face Down." The song went multi-platinum and featured in several video games while the track "In Fate's Hands" was featured on the popular Madden NFL 07 video game. In keeping with their strong social values, they joined My Chemical Romance and Rise Against in co-headlining the US Take Action tour which promoted youth suicide prevention. They spent the next two years touring heavily ahead of their follow-up album, 2009's Lonely Road. It debuted at number 14 on the Billboard 200, their highest position to date and produced a minor hit in "Pen & Paper." It also marked the first of numerous lineup changes with Matt Carter replacing Reidy on guitar. After the self-released Hell of Highwater EP in 2010, they distributed their third album, 2011's I Am the Enemy, via the Collective Sounds label and peaked at 61 on the pop charts. The album's title track became a number one hit on the Christian chart, a feat they would repeat several more times on subsequent albums. Another EP ,Et Tu, Brute?, appeared in 2013, after which the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus officially moved forward as a totally independent band.

Their lineup continued to shift with the departure of Carter, guitarist Kitchens, and drummer John Wilkes. Randy Winter and Josh Burke joined on guitar and John Hartman briefly took over on drums for the group's 2014 album 4. After that, he was replaced by John Espy on drums. Despite their fall-off on the mainstream charts, the band remained a steady touring draw throughout the remainder of the decade, releasing their fifth album, The Awakening, in 2018. After 2020's The Emergency EP, they were relatively quiet for a time. New members Nadeem Salam (keyboards) and K Enagonio (unclean vocals) joined ahead 2025's X's For Eyes, the band's debut for Better Noise, and first full-length in seven years. ~ Timothy Monger
