Julia Wolf's idiosyncratic take on visceral pop sees her move from low-slung 808 beats to slick, guitar-led synth pop or gritty alt-rock in the blink of an eye. Showcasing her eclectic style, Wolf's debut EP, Girls in Purgatory, appeared in 2021 before her first full-length LP, Good Thing We Stayed, appeared in early 2023. The antagonized follow-up, 2025's PRESSURE, was filled with dissonant, booming textures that bridged alt-pop and hard-hitting indie rock.
Born and raised in New York to Italian parents, Julia Wolf had her sights set on music at a young age, playing classical piano from the age of seven and writing her own material before eventually studying at the SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Music. Deciding to step away from the classical world, Wolf embarked on writing and producing her own songs. She couldn't find the right audience for her eclectic take on pop and indie, and after considering a move back to Italy with her parents, she hooked up with fellow New Yorker Jackson Foote (Loote). The pair instantly hit it off, and with Foote's connections, the pair started to write and record new material.
The first fruits of their collaboration appeared in 2019 with the tracks "Captions" and "Chlorine" showcasing Wolf's silky vocals against a backdrop of anthemic pop. A string of tracks followed in 2020, including "Ghost" and "Pillow," which saw Wolf's music go viral, and her eccentric take pop found a fan base. 2021 saw her deliver her debut EP, Girls in Purgatory, which included the much streamed "In My Way." A consistent flow of tracks followed in 2022 before she issued her debut album, Good Thing We Stayed, on Poorchoice/BMG in early 2023.
A moody indie rock song, "Burning House," appeared in 2023 and was followed by a string of more dissonant, confrontational singles in the lead-up to Wolf's second long-player, PRESSURE. A blend of bolder alt-pop and grungy, feedback-injected rock sometimes bordering on metal, it arrived on girls in purgatory/Many Hats Endeavors in May of 2025. ~ Rich Wilson & Marcy Donelson
